Patients

If you have ever had to fill out the same form several times, or new forms with the same information, you’ve experienced the need for information sharing between doctors. Because patients may see several different physicians besides their primary care provider, different sets of medical records for the same patient can be found in different offices. This creates annoying paperwork for you, the patient, but also creates a very real risk that you could be prescribed a medication that you are allergic to, or are already taking, or that you will receive the same tests you have already undergone (and paid for). In the unfortunate event that you are unable to give a complete medical history to the doctor (for example, in the event of a car accident, or if you don’t recall all of your medicines or test results from memory), MyHealth Access Network is there to provide that information to the doctor, and ensure that you get the highest quality care at every encounter.

Participating in MyHealth Access Network helps ensure that you receive the highest quality care – it might even save your life by getting critical medical information to your doctor immediately.

What is an HIE?

HIE stands for Health Information Exchange

A Health Information Exchange is a non-profit organization that is directed by its members (hospitals, doctors, insurance companies and other healthcare providers) to efficiently and securely share key information from your electronic health records (such as illnesses, emergencies, allergies, medicines, test results, and other health needs) with one another to coordinate the work they do with you and for you, among all of their different electronic record systems.

For you as a patient, having your providers participate in an HIE like MyHealth Access Network, Oklahoma’s state-designated HIE, offers many benefits:

  • Better Coordination of Care: All your healthcare providers can access your complete and up-to-date health information, ensuring they are all on the same page and working together effectively.
  • Increased Accuracy and Safety: Sharing your medical history reduces the risk of errors like duplicate tests, incorrect prescriptions, or missed allergies, making your care safer.
  • Quicker Access to Information: In emergencies, having your health information readily available can be crucial for making fast, informed decisions about your care.
  • Improved Continuity of Care: If you see multiple specialists or switch doctors, an HIE helps maintain a consistent and complete record of your health history, ensuring smooth transitions in your care.
  • Enhanced Communication: An HIE enables better communication among your healthcare providers, leading to more timely referrals, coordinated follow-ups, and a more organized approach to managing your health.

MyHealth Access Network’s HIE is a valuable resource that enhances your care and supports a more integrated, patient-centered healthcare experience. Ask your healthcare providers if they are participating in MyHealth Access Network!
